, 2010. >>> well, good morning, everybody, and thanks for joining us. i'm betty nguyen. we begin with the first major hurricane to approach the east coast this season. hurricane earl is now centered east of cape hatteras on north carolina's outer banks. earl has weakened to a category 2 hurricane with peak winds just over 100 miles per hour. earl's projected path takes it up the east coast with its eye staying offshore. karen brown has more now from kill devil hills, north carolina. good morning, karen. >> reporter: good morning to you, betty. it is so intense here. we were down on the dunes you see behind me. we had to come back up because you can't see down there. our equipment is all wet. really, it is wind at 105 miles an hour with 100-foot waves offshore. they evacuated 125,000 people from the outer banks and they're hunkered down, waiting for the worst to be over. in income fk overnight, earl delivered a stinging blow. >> just the power. it's absolutely phenomenal. >> reporter: high winds, heavy rain and pounding surf battered the outer banks. the system appears to be losin
, everyone, on this labor day. thanks for joining us. good to see you this morning. i'm terrell brown in for betty nguyen. >>> labor day marks the beginning of the traditional push towards election day. this year with the economy working against them, democrats are fighting to retain control of congress. with that as a backdrop, president obama heads to wisconsin today. there are key senate seat in the race for governor hotly contested. tara mergener is in washington with more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. both of these races are very competitive. this week the president will make two speeches aimed at trying to convince voters he can get the economy back on track. president obama will try to convince voters this week that democratic policies are working. >> to heal our economy, we need more than a healthy stock market. we need bustling main streets and a growing, thriving middle class. >> reporter: he'll head to wisconsin today to give a speech about the economy. on wednesday he'll visit cleveland where he'll announce new steps to help small businesses. all along
2, 2010. captioning funded by cbs >>> good morning, everybody. thanks for joining us. i'm betty nguyen. we begin with hurricane earl, which is expected to strike the north carolina coast later today. president obama has declared a state of emergency and folks on hatteras island have been ordered to evacuate. earl is a large and powerful category 4 storm with sustained winds of 140 miles per hour. after earl strikes north carolina, it is expected to move north but will likely stay offshore. a hurricane warning is in effect from bogue inlet, north carolina, to the virginia border. a hurricane watch from cape henlopen, delaware, and also includes martha's vineyard. karen brown is in kill devil island with more. good morning, karen. >> reporter: good morning. earl picked up steam and it is tracking closer to the outer banks. about 50 miles off cape hatteras. that is where it is expected to pass. in the communities of -- south of here, there are those mandatory evacuation orders for known nonresident and they have until this morning to get out. kevin isn't sticking around for earl, e
moisture and it is right on top of us right now. we want switch it over to live doppler 9000 hd. devon lucie is driving the controls this morning. you can see the rain falling in the area. the yellow and orange areas are really coming down. some one to two inches an hour and everything is lifting to the north at 20 miles an hour. the heavy stuff to the east across eastern prince georges, calvert counties, as well. this is coming from southern maryland where they have really been hit hard. another area of moderate rainfall to the north through montgomery county, loudoun county and lifting to frederick and carroll counties on i-70. a lot of rain out there. as we zoom in you will see the heavy showers in and around the metro. upper marlboro south and east coming down, cats and dogs and jason in the chat room said guinea pigs and everything at the same time. let's switch over to the storm totals from what we have been watching. locally you see the bands of the heavier totals to the west but southern maryland n to the northern neck, we have seen some numbers down there -- doppler estimates
